It is possible that for many people the concept of graphic design is not so clear. Does graphic design have artistic or merely commercial purposes? Can we see it in galleries or does it belong only to the posters that advertise products? Perhaps it is broader than we assume at first glance.

As an introduction, we thought we'd create this guide to graphic design, so that in your day-to-day life you can recognize those elements that can help you make more than just a "pretty" image. So let's start with the basics.

Graphic designers make receivers experience emotions, learn information or acquire knowledge through different techniques, signs, images, signals and novel and creative ideas.

Graphic design is practically all around us, all the time. On the covers of books, the posters of upcoming movies, the logos of our favorite brands, the design of the packaging of what we buy at the supermarket, on traffic signs, the interface of a website. In short: it is impossible to escape from it.

Although it has not always had the same preponderance as a Renaissance painting that we can see in a museum, time has shown that graphic design has as much artistic merit as any sculpture. For this reason, nowadays there are different contests and awards such as Tipos de Santander that seek to vindicate the importance of the discipline, as well as its exponents. Likewise, we can already see rooms dedicated to its most influential representatives in venues such as the MoMA.
